A Manned mission to Mars Mission

Our next step of planetary exploration is the planet Mars. Planet Mars is an interesting destination because; it has similarities to our earth characteristic. However, sending a manned mission to mars is an extremely difficult and complex mission. A feasibility studies conducted by Hoffman and Kaplan stated that a round-trip to Mars lasting about 1,000 days. The mission include a 200-300 days to travel and a crew has to stay in Mars for around 400-500 days and return to earth which will take another 200-300 days. It is envisioned that the mars mission will carry 6 astronauts. During the transfer orbit, the crew will live in a microgravity environment for about 200-300 days. During these times, there wont be any day or night in the spacecraft unlike the low-earth orbit ISS. The psychological demand of mars mission is due to the extremely long-distance of travel will the duration of permanent living under the dependence of life-support system. The degree of isolation, confinement social monotony and the impossibility of any short-term rescue in case of emergencies. During a voyage to mars, a stay on the Martian surface, crew members are expected to endure extraordinary long period of extreme confinement and isolation that may last from 500-1000 days.

 

Mars Trajectory

The long mission to Mars present the greatest challenge for maintaining crew motivation, morale and individual well-being. The long flight which lasted about 15-200 days might act as stressors that may affect mood, well-being and performance.

A strong issue is to maintain motivation and morale as transit time involve long periods of monotony and boredom. The limited size of spaceship, privacy will be harder to achieve than during an orbital space station. Compare to the outbound flight, the inbound flight might have less work activities issue as the crew will be busy in preparing their arrival. And most interestingly most of their important work will be over. A decline of motivation and activities could prove a disadvantage for the efficiency of the crew.

Skill retention is another issue, with the lengthy transit time, skills needed on mars surface will need to be constantly remembered. Many of the skill retention investigation have been researched (Patrick, 1992), the research was not tested on extreme conditions of space missions

Today have a long discussion with Dr. Mukai to discuss my research. She was quite amazed by my research and however . she shows alot of concern about the direction that i am going . she told me that i have make too much ambigouous assumption. thinking like this thinking like that and she did advise me to look deeper on the generations studies issue. Not concentrate on book on space environment travel. She said that it is quite old topic when i present my research so i was kinda hhmm.. have to research more on generation studies !!! not space environment .. Gotcha .. so from today i will research about it

Moon Expedition and the Establishment of a Lunar Base

We are capable of exploring the moon, as the Apollo mission from 1969 to 1972 proved that human could work in lunar surface. In a mission to the moon, Space Agency have plan to set up a permanent Lunar Base in the Shalketon Crater. It is envision that a typical expedition to the moon permanent base will consist of 4-6 crews who stay in the lunar base for 6 to 12 months (Struster, 1996). Early plan discuss that the Lunar Base will have approximately 1 habitation module, 1 laboratory module and 1 crew vehicle. The base would be built in incremental steps, starting with four-person crews making several seven-day visits starting 2020.

The Crew will be expected to work in the laboratory module and conduct EHA (Extra Habitat Activities) on regular basis to conduct geological, biological and chemical research on the lunar surface. Just like the International Space Station, it is expected that a crew rotation will happen every 6 months via re-supply from earth.

There is a similarity between the Moon permanent base environments with the Antarctica winter-over environment, although a moon mission will consist of 4-6 person while Antarctica mission involves a crew of 15-100 people. However, the moon mission could be less risky as there is a possibility of evacuating injured or sick crew members, whereas an Antarctica Mission could not afford to conduct such evacuation mission. The Environmental situation between a lunar mission and Antarctica mission does not differs that much. In a typical 6 month lunar mission, there will be limited re-supply from earth due to cost-consideration. However, the most important issue faced by the lunar crew members is social-monotony derived from small-size crew. The generality of two-way communication link will compensate the monotony and prevent the decrement of in mood, behavior and performance of crew members. The visual view of Planet earth at the background might also contribute to improve the effect of feeling autonomy and isolation. (Kanzas, 2003)

Identifying New Psychological Needs of Next Generation Astronauts in Long-Term Space Flight

 

Introduction: As we are leaving our cradle, humanity pushed to explore space further and longer. In the future, astronaut will travel further and longer to deep space. Their job will be more and more demanding than current astronaut, the stress and expectation of these astronauts will be overwhelming more demanding and complex. Thus as a result, mission design planner is faced a stronger challenge to design mission workload that will meet the psychological needs of these future astronauts. With Astronauts facing new challenges in their future missions, new generation studies will develop a different kind of psychological needs that is different from the current generation astronauts. Many of the leading generation social studies pointed out that technology and new social environment have pushed the youth to new different needs to fulfill their life. In this paper, the main purpose of the research is to identify the next-generation astronaut psychological needs. The research will focus on new technological social environment that has evolved during the Internet Generation (Twenge, 2006) and its impact on the youth today. Future astronaut that will explore the Moon and Mars will fall into the age-range of the internet generation. These new generation have grown up in a extremely different environment than their predecessors. Although, there will be many essential psychological needs between the two generation of astronaut. Different generation of astronauts might carry different behavior and reaction to space flight environment. The purpose of the research is to identify the different psychological behavior of future astronaut in long-term space flight. Methodology: The methodology of the research is to data mine from 2 fields of studies. 1 field of studies is to conduct literature research on existing and updated studies about culture and psychological studies in long-term space flight. Literature research paper by Nick Kanzas and Jack Struster discuss about the environment in long-term space flights. The other set is to conduct paper research on another field of studies in modern social psychology studies especially in field internet psychology and generation studies. In generation studies, we identify the different environment that different generation grows up in and what their environment could have an effect to their general behavior in their adult life. The effect of internet also plays an important role in the shaping a generation characteristic. Result: Upon completion of the two fields of studies, a cross-reference analysis will be conducted to find potential connection between the two fields of studies. The cross analysis will generate the hypothesis of different psychological needs of next generation astronaut Discussion: After listing new psychological needs of next generation of astronaut, a discussion of possible futures studies will be discussed. Based on the list, generated from the exchange of two studies, discuss various possible research strategies to help prove the few hypotheses. The studies could be used further to assist space mission designer to include in their modular design and mission planner could use the study to further plan task that compliments with the result of the studies.

Identifying New Psychological Needs of Next Generation Astronauts in long-term Space Flight

Abstract

Introduction:  As we are leaving our cradle, humanity pushed to explore space further and longer. The United States announce the vision of exploration for the future to explore moon, mars and beyond. Other international agency soon also their vision of exploration, ESA, Chinese Space Agency and JAXA also announce their plans to explore the universe further. Future astronaut will travel further and longer. Their job will be more and more demanding than current astronaut, the stress and expectation of these astronauts will be overwhelming more complicated. Thus as a result, mission planner must try it best to cater to the psychological needs of these future astronauts. In this paper, the purpose of the research is to identify the next-generation astronaut psychological needs based on current social environment studies. The research will focus on new technological social environment that exist in within the internet years.  It is expected that the internet generation (1994-2007) will fall into the age-range of future astronaut candidates to explore moon, mars and beyond. Although, Basic human psychological needs might still be plays a strong role in space flight, Different generation of astronauts might carry different behavior and reaction to space flight environment. The purpose of the research is to identify the new psychological behavior of future astronaut in long-term space flight.

Methodology:  The methodology of the research is to generate 2 sets of data from 2 fields of studies. 1 set is to conduct paper research on existing and updated studies about culture and psychological studies in space flight. The other set is to conduct paper research on another field of studies in modern psychology especially in internet psychology and generation studies. To identify what new psychological problems faced today’s teenagers and adolescent and what effect that will have in their future. Upon study of the two fields of studies, I will cross reference the studies to find similarities and possible connection between the two studies to identify findings that could lead to a probable identification of possible new psychological behavior of future astronaut in future mission.

Results:  Result of the two fields of studies of is carefully analyzed and selected new behavior of the new generation would be then cross-check with studies in long-term space travel environment studies. With the cross-check, a list of possible of new behavior will be indicated and listed as a possible new psychological need of the next generation of astronaut.

Discussion: After listing new psychological needs of next generation of astronaut, a discussion of possible futures studies will be discussed. Based on the list, generated from the exchange of two studies, discuss various possible research strategies to help prove the few hypotheses. The studies could be used further to assist space mission designer to include in their modular design and mission planner could use the study to further plan task that compliments with the result of the studies.

Today i am reading the aviation , space and environmetnal medicine journal to learn about space flight behavior ..in this book, i learned alot about many basic behavioral health and science and Psychology and Culture Factors in space travel.

In addition , i am continueing to further read on  Space Psychology to further strengthen my understanding of space psychology.

Also today i bought 2 new books on  New generation studies
